Because scars are rigid (and not pliable), they can disturb the regular oscillation and voice production. Scars may impede the vibration of the pliable epithelium (membranous cover) of the vocal fold even when they are very small. With high resolution endoscopes with NBI, we are able to detect even minimal scars in the office.
If changes of voice technique cannot resolve the effects of scars, we recommend phonomicrosurgical removal with high precision instruments. Alternatively, steroid injections may help. Photoangiolytic laser surgery may be a new way of treatment. In most cases after adequate treatment including voice therapy, scars can resolve or be reduced significantly.
